  • Emrys Chew's Post: Phaius tankervilleae (Banks) Blume (1856), the ubiquitous ‘Nun’s Orchid’, widely distributed across South, Southeast and East Asia, as well as the Pacific Islands. Its sobriquet derives from the resemblance of the flower habit to a nun’s pointed hood; in plant growth habit it is sympodial and terrestrial. Named for Emma Colebrook Bennet (1752-1836), Countess of Tankerville, a major collector of exotic plants in Georgian England.
