Papilionanthe Mandai Gardens ‘SBG’ AM/OSSEA (Papilionanthe teres × Papilionanthe tricuspidata) (S’pore Orchids; David Lim, 2018) is a robust and floriferous heirloom hybrid of 1950s vintage, registered only recently because of the extraordinary circumstances of its disappearance and rediscovery.
This hybrid originated from a cross made by John Laycock during the 1950s. Raised at the nursery Laycock established at Mandai, the seedling was treasured as a family heirloom by Laycock’s daughter Mrs Amy Ede.
Yet, as a single clone, it was never registered up until the time of its disappearance - either stolen or sold without permission - in the late 1990s. Visibly upset, Mrs Ede had told David Lim, her operations manager at the time, that it was to be named for Mandai Gardens if ever recovered.
The hybrid eventually reappeared in Indonesia, where it was misidentified as the long-lost Papilionanthe tricuspidata. It was propagated and retailed as the species itself for well over a decade, until questions about provenance and morphology could be settled by more careful investigation.
DNA sequence analysis carried out at Singapore Botanic Gardens has now confirmed its hybrid identity. Historical research has further identified it as the third of three known progeny of Papilionanthe tricuspidata hybridised by John Laycock. He was also the originator of Papilionanthe Amy (Ple. hookeriana x Ple. tricuspidata), named for his daughter in 1940, and another cross (Ple. Cooperi x Ple. tricuspidata) first flowered in 1953 but still unnamed.
This orchid was named Papilionanthe Mandai Gardens in fulfilment of Mrs Ede’s wishes. Regardless of controversy over provenance and parentage, it is a very fine hybrid of undisputed historical interest and horticultural merit.
