Acherontia styx is unplaced species in  the family Sphingidae  subfamily: Sphinginae, tribe: Acherontiini,  
Genus Acherontia 
This species is found in eastern continental Asia, from northeastern China (where it is a migrant) and Japan, south through eastern China and Vietnam to Peninsular Malaysia and peninsular Thailand.
