Picus canus is unplaced species in  the family Picidae  subfamily: Picinae, tribe: Picini,  
Genus Picus 
This species is found in Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, as well as a wide belt south of the boreal coniferous forests across Asia all the way to the Pacific coast, Sakhalin and Hokkaidō.
