Haemantheae
Cape Provinces, the Northern Provinces and the Free State ofNative of South Africa. Most Gethyllis species grow in the summer-dry areas of South Africa and Namibia. They produce hairy and/or spiral/twisted leaves in their winter growing season and become dormant in mid/late Spring. Flowers are produced from ground in the Summer but are only last a few days. The ovary is subterranean and months after pollination, usually at the start of the new growing season a sausage-shaped aromatic fruit is pushed up containing a sweet-tasting gel and the seeds with very short viability and germinate immediately). The flowers are most often white and similar to crocus.
